About Joss
Joss de Groot has always been fascinated by everything that surrounds her. As a child she documented her environment through drawing and painting. But the results were never lifelike enough for her. So when she discovered photography and all its creative possibilities, she knew that was her calling. She enrolled in The Academy of Photography in Amsterdam in 1988, and since then has developed her craft and perfected into an individual style that is still her signature today.
Joss’ fashion, beauty and lifestyle photography captured the attention of many major Dutch magazines before she moved to Asia, where she has been living for the past eight years. Her photographs have been featured in KL TimeOut Esquire, Bazaar, Hello and more. Although the Asian joy of life and the exotic cultures are a huge inspiration, Joss is still very much a Dutch photographer: “It’s in the light”, she explains. “Although I love variety, there’s often a kind of Rembrandt-like light in my pictures. I like pictures that tell a story - whether it’s a still or a portrait. I want to capture and show the beauty of that object or that person.”
Joss is a professional all-round photographer and has had a lot of experience working in studios as well as on location. “I never forget that a photo shoot is something big, something quite intimate, not only for casual models, but also for professionals. I always try to make them feel comfortable. Only then”, she says, “they are confident enough to express themselves completely, so allowing me, my camera and the audience a glimpse of their true self.”
By offering photography courses and photography trips, Joss also lets other people benefit from her experience and her love for photography. Joss has a passion for the beauty that exists within every human being and an eye for detail that she captures in her work with elegance and grace. Her fascination and interest in photography are infectious and never ending, allowing everyone to share in them.
